Dillinger, The man behind the legend

John Dillinger, the most famous and most publicized outlaw of his time. He was often referred to by the press as the "Gentleman Bandit," for his kindness to others during robberies. Dillinger wasn't like other outlaws of the time, he was polite, well-mannered and even charming at times. He didn't believe in killing or hurting a soul, just robbing banks. This doesn't justify his crimes, but it does tell us something about his character. Robbing banks was what he did for a living. It wasn't who he was. Inside, he was actually a kind gentle human being.

Historical Facts

Let history record, the nineteen thirties was a time of mass corruption and confusion. It wasn't always easy to tell who were the good guys and who were the bad guys. Crime and corruption was felt on both sides of the law. Record breaking numbers of people were unemployed during the great depression. This was at a time when large families were common and without any means of birth control or welfare programs to help the poor. Many good honest citizens turned to crime to feed their families. This was also known as the dark years.

Bank robbery was at a all time high in 1933 - 34. Honest living wasn't paying enough to put food on the table. This is why good honest folks often turned to armed robbery to feed their families. President Hoover called upon the Red Cross to give the people seed for farming, and feed for livestalk,  but  not to give "hand-outs to the poor. In otherwords, he wasn't going to help feed the starving. He was voted out of office during the next election, replaced by President Roosevelt.
